Daniel C. Carter, PhD
Co-founder, Chairman and President and Chief Executive Officer

Dr. Carter co-founded and led the Company since its formation in 1997. Prior to starting New Century, Dr. Carter was employed by NASA for a period of 11 years in positions of increasing responsibility including Chief of the Biophysics and Advanced Materials Branch. He founded the Laboratory for Structural Biology at Marshall Space Flight Center; and, most importantly, he was the Principal Investigator of a structural biology group that discovered and refined the structure of human serum albumin and its principal domains. Dr. Carter has been the Principal Investigator on more than 15 microgravity experiment payloads carried out on board the Space Shuttle, Mir, and the International Space Station. Dr. Carter also served NASA in a Senior Executive Service (SST) appointment as the Senior Scientist for Biophysics at the Marshall Space Flight Center. During his tenure at NASA, Dr. Carter was awarded the prestigious NASA Inventor of the Year Awards (1990, 1991) and the NASA Exceptional Service Medal (1997). He has authored more than 70 scientific publications and has 30 patents and patents pending.

Dr. Carter earned a PhD in Crystallography focusing in macromolecular structure determination from the University of Pittsburgh, an MS in Organic Chemistry focusing in pharmaceutical derivations from marine natural products from the University of Hawaii, and a BS in Chemistry and BA in Psychology from the University of Oklahoma.


Joseph X. Ho, PhD
Co-founder, Vice President and Director

Dr. Ho has been Vice-President and Director of the Company since its formation in 1997. Prior to co-founding the Company, Dr. Ho worked for nine years at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center first as a Visiting Scientist and ultimately as a Senior Scientist in the Microgravity and Materials Sciences Branch. During this time, Dr. Ho worked closely with Dr. Carter on the structure of human serum albumin and other protein structures. Dr. Ho's special interest and expertise is in the application of advanced computational methods to protein crystals for the purpose of developing structural information useful for drug design. Dr. Ho earned a PhD in crystallography from the University of Pittsburgh, and undergraduate degrees from China.


James R. Hudson, Jr.
Co-founder, Director

Mr. Hudson is the former Founder and President of Research Genetics, Inc., the largest biotech company in the state of Alabama and one of the world's largest manufacturers of artificial DNA and distributors of reagents and other products for molecular genetics research. Research Genetics was sold in 2000 to Invitrogen Corporation (Nasdaq: IVGN), a provider of products and services for molecular biology and cell biology research. Prior to the merger, Research Genetics had become the world's leader in genetic linkage products and an integral partner in the Human Genome Project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. Under Hudson, Research Genetics employed more than 250 people and realized annual sales in excess of $26 million.

In 1970, along with his father and brother, Mr. Hudson co-founded Hudson Metals, a gray iron and aluminum foundry. Over the next twelve years, Hudson Metals grew by 30% a year until it was sold in 1982. In addition, Mr. Hudson has advised and incubated multiple companies in industries ranging from internet services to genetics research.

Mr. Hudson is a co-founder and served as the first President of the Biotechnology Association of Alabama, and has helped found and incubate several successful biotech companies in Huntsville. Mr. Hudson also serves as Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama at Huntsville (UAH) and is a member of the College of Science Advisory Council as well as the Board of Directors of the UAH Foundation. Mr. Hudson is the President of the Hudson-Alpha Institute for Biotechnology, a non-profit research institute founded in Huntsville with a mission to use biotechnology to improve human health, stimulate economic development, and inspire Alabama's youth to seek careers in science.

Mr. Hudson served three years in the U.S. Army, including a year as a combat pilot in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Mr. Hudson holds an MS in Physics and an MS in Biology from University of Alabama at Huntsville and a BS in Chemistry from the University of Alabama


Joel Dobbs, PhD
Director

Dr. Dobbs is currently Vice President, Information Technology at Eisai Corporation of North America, the US unit of Eisai, a $6 billion global pharmaceutical company headquartered in Tokyo Japan. Prior to this role he served as VP  of Information Technology, Data Management and Business Re-Engineering at Eisai Medical Research, the global clinical development arm of Eisai.

Dr. Dobbs previously spent two years as Executive in Residence and Program Director of the Pharmaceutical Management Program at Stevens Institute of Technology and as a consultant to numerous pharmaceutical, biotechnology and software companies. Prior to his retirement in 2004, Dr. Dobbs was Vice-President, Research Information Services and Global IT Strategy and Compliance for Schering-Plough Corporation.  In this capacity, he was responsible for all information technology for the Schering Plough Research Institute as well as for strategy and IT regulatory compliance globally.

Before joining Schering-Plough Dr. Dobbs spent 12 years with Glaxo Inc. in various management and executive positions in regulatory affairs, medical services and information services.  He also spent one year with Glaxo Wellcome as Worldwide Director, Information Management and Analysis.  Dr. Dobbs has also served as a professor of pharmacy at Samford University and as Vice President and a Managing Partner for Pharmacy Specialties, Inc., a pharmacy management-consulting firm. 

Dr. Dobbs has served as a consultant to numerous organizations including some of the world's largest software companies and several small to midsize software, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. He is a member of the board of directors of New Century Pharmaceuticals. 

Dr. Dobbs is the author of numerous scientific and technical publications, including chapters in five books, and is a frequent speaker at industry-related seminars and conferences.  He has served on the Compaq Computer Corporation Pharmaceutical Advisory Board, the Digital Equipment Corporation Pharmaceutical Advisory Board, the PhRMA/FDA Information Management Working Group, the PhRMA CIO Forum, the PMA Information Management Steering Committee, the Documentum Advisory Council, and the PMA Safety Surveillance Committee.  Dr. Dobbs represented the pharmaceutical industry on the steering committee for the Industry Coalition on Part 11 which worked with the FDA to successfully revise the guidance for compliance with this regulation. 

Dr. Dobbs is past chair of  PhRMA's Information Management Policy and Coordinating Committee and past chair of the Pharmaceutical Research Information Executive Forum.  He serves on the Boards of several non-profit organizations and has previously served on the editorial boards of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy, the Drug Information Journal, and Applied Clinical Trials. 

Dr. Dobbs received a BS in pharmacy from Samford University, a Master of Public Health from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and a doctorate in pharmacy from the University of Tennessee.   He has completed executive programs at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and MIT.
